Early Students
The first student to graduate from the new program was John Raymond Schoonover of Bethany, Pennsylvania. In 1879 Noriyuki Kozima of Japan became the first international student to study architecture at Cornell. After his return to Japan in 1881, he taught science, mathematics, building materials, and architectural history. Margaret Hicks (A.B. 1878, B. Arch. 1880) was the first professional woman architect in the United States. All three served as president of the Architectural Association.
